Nurses and their Multi-tasking Roles |
Author : Manju Chhugani |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Before the inception of professional nursing, women had cared for others as a
natural instinct. It was during the Crimean War in the mid-1800s when Florence
Nightingale cared for the wounded soldiers that ushered in the era of modern
nursing. Nursing has grown and flourished since that time. The roles of a nurse are
continuously expanding. Today nurses work independently in not only providing
care to patients but also participate in various other activities such as decision
making, research, advocacy, etc.
Nurses are often required to do many tasks at more or less the same time- so called
as “multitasking”. They need to provide care, administer medications, make
decisions, advocate and counsel patients and their families, maintain documentation
and much more at almost the same time. Nurses shoulder several roles such as that
of a caregiver, communicator, client advocate, researcher, decision maker, etc.
There is a seemingly a never-ending list of tasks to be completed. Further many a
times in cases of emergency, the entire care needs to be re-planned and executed.
Hence, the ability to multitask is essential for the nurse to provide the best care
possible for the patients. Moreover, it is also important to realize that nurses need
to be multitasking and also retain the kindness and compassion required for care, no
matter what the circumstances are. |

A Descriptive Study to Assess the Knowledge and Practice of Staff Nurses regarding Intravenous Therapy and Its Complications in a Selected Hospital in New Delhi |
Author : Asha T Aniyan1 , Sartaj Parveen |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :More than 25 million patients have peripheral intravenous catheters placed each
year in hospitals. Infusion therapy is believed to account for one-third of all the
nosocomial bacteremia and other intravenous therapy-related complications. In this
regard, a randomized, prospective, controlled study was conducted to assess the
knowledge and practice of staff nurses regarding complications of intravenous
therapy. Staff nurses were purposively selected and knowledge regarding
intravenous therapy and its complications was assessed using a structured
questionnaire and their practice using a structured checklist. The data collected
showed that majority of the staff nurses were having average knowledge (83%) and
average practice (90%) about the intravenous therapy and the related
complications. There was a significant relationship between the knowledge of staff
nurses related to intravenous therapy and the complications and the practice
followed by them. Furthermore, it was found that although their knowledge was
above average yet there were only few staff nurses (3%) showing above average
performance. It was also found that about (7%) staff nurses were not able to
perform correctly during the administration of intravenous medication and were
categorized as below average. This study concluded that the knowledge regarding
intravenous therapy and its related complications should be improved among staff
nurses by incorporating various in service education and induction classes. For
better results in relation to practice of intravenous therapy and reduction in
complications regular supervision of practice should be conducted.

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Prolonged labor is one of the leading causes of death among mothers and newborns
in the developing world. Use of the Partograph can save lives by ensuring that
labor is closely monitored and that life-threatening complications such as obstructed
labor are identified and treated. The mobile Partograph, a novel tool, can provide
real-time decision support to healthcare providers enabling them to assess the
course of labor and carry out appropriate interventions as necessary. mLabor is a
mobile health decision-support application built on Dimagi’s open source platform,
CommCare. A usability study was conducted to assess the feasibility of mLabor in a
real-life setting in Hakeem Abdul Hameed Centenary (HAHC) Hospital, Jamia

Heart Transplantation: A Review of Current Perspectives |
Author : Vijay VR1 , Naseem M |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Heart transplantation (HT) has evolved as the definitive surgical approach in the
treatment of end stage heart failure (HF). Advancements in the fields of
immunosuppression, infection prophylaxis, and surgical techniques have
transformed heart transplantation from what was once considered an experimental
intervention into a routine treatment. Despite the development of science and
technology and the incidence of HF patients, the number of HT is not in expansive
stage due the shortage of donors and lack of willingness. The postoperative care
determines the success of transplantation. The whole transplant and caring team
needs to work in a collaborative manner for the successful outcome |

Gigantic Parovarian Cyst: A Rare Case Report |
Author : Shivani Badal1 , Laiphrakpam Ranjit Singh |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Giant parovarian cysts are rarely seen in adolescents. The cysts predominantly arise
from mesothelium covering the peritoneum, usually in the broad ligament but
sometimes may be seen between ovaries and ipsilateral fallopian tubes. Parovarian
cysts constitute 10 to 33% of adnexal masses and are usually seen in the 3rd and 4th
decades of life. These cysts may vary from small lesions to larger ones. Small cyst
may remain undiagnosed but larger cyst usually presents with conditions due to
pressure effect or swelling. Patients presenting with large paraovarian cyst need
surgical treatment and the tumour can be removed by laparotomy. If the cyst can be
separated from ovary and fallopian tube, attempt should be made to conserve the
ovary and fallopian tube by considering ovariopexy.
We report a case of parovarian cyst in a 37 year female presenting with an
abdominal swelling gradually increasing in size with a provisional diagnosis of a
benign unilocular right ovarian cyst made accordingly and was removed surgically
and the histopathology revealed its identity.
